What’s Working: Cycling for Multiple Sclerosis: VIDEO

This weekend you might see more cyclists than usual peddling around Madison County. The Mississippi 150, formerly known as Bike to Battlefield gets rolling from Hyatt Place in Ridgeland.
The goal is to raise $100,000 to help people with Multiple Sclerosis live the the best lives they possibly can. To do that, National MS Society has a weekend planned of live music, good food and cycling, lots and lots of cycling.

Imagine peddling up to 75 miles a day through some of Mississippi’s most beautiful scenery. You’ll need a good bicycle and a strong pair of legs. Odds are, you’ll enjoy every minute of it.

Mandy Ferrington is the Senior Development Manager for the National MS Society in Mississippi. She says, ” We have about 150 cyclists that will be riding anywhere from 25 to 150 miles around the Madison and Rankin and Hinds County areas to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis.”

Riders can ask for money or get sponsored per mile, but the easiest way for you to help might be making a donation at bikems.org.  Funds go toward research and to people who live with MS.

Mandy elaborates, ” Such as freedom from falls to teach people, because they have a lot of issues with walking and things like that, and it just helps them and it just helps them live a better life with multiple sclerosis.” Saturday’s course takes you through Ridgeland, Raymond, Bolton and Flora. Sunday from Ridgeland to Canton the Rez.

Mandy says, ” Probably 75% of them (riders) are going to do the 150, and that’s 75 miles one day, 75 miles the next.” Rest stops are every 8 to 12 miles.

This is the 30th annual Bike Mississippi event. Appropriately enough, Saturday night cyclists can enjoy an 80’s themed party, with live music, dinner and drinks.
