Shemar Moore admits he was 'in denial for a couple of years' after his mother was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1999: VIDEO

Mother and son: Marilyn and her only son Shemar, shown in 2009 in Los Angeles, have been united in their battle against multiple sclerosis

As time passed the former The Young And The Restless star began realizing the toll the debilitating disease was taking on his mother.

'I just had to check myself and say, ''Listen, she's scared and asking for help, so let's help her turn in the right direction,''' said Shemar who moved his mother from San Francisco to Los Angeles to have her close by.

Shemar said his 72-year-old mother still has her 'down days' but other times 'she's bouncing around and trying to do a little dance in the kitchen, going down to the beach or to a ballgame or goes out with friends to a play or a dinner.'

The Image Award winner has been active in raising awareness and funds to combat the disease.

Shemar and Marilyn were scheduled to be honored on Thursday at the Dinner Of Champions organized by the Southern California and Nevada chapters of the National MS Society.

The actor has launched a fun clothing line called Baby Girl with a portion of every sale going to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Shemar posted an image on Instagram on Thursday promoting the clothing line and noted that he would be presenting a check to the National MS Society at the event.
