Regents Park police officer with multiple sclerosis needs funds for treatment in Singapore

Regents Park resident and police officer Ian Callaghan needs $80,000 to go for the second phase of medical treatment for MS in Singapore. His colleague Yolanda Booth has been there for him with strong fundraising efforts. Photo by Stephen Archer.

REGENTS Park resident Ian Callaghan has helped protect the community for a decade.

Now the senior constable needs the community’s help.

Senior Constable Callaghan needs a haematopoietic stem cell transplantation for multiple sclerosis in Singapore next month and needs help to get there.

About $140,000 is required for a total of three trips to Singapore, one of which has already been undertaken. But another $90,000 for the remaining two trips is still required.

Snr Const Callaghan is a firearms instructor at the Oxley police academy, where he works alongside Senior Constable Yolanda Booth.

They first worked together 10 years ago and since Snr Const Callaghan’s diagnosis with MS in 2013, Snr Const Booth has worked tirelessly to raise money.

Snr Const Booth said her colleague had already been for one round of the treatment, which involves taking good stem cells, harvesting them and then replacing the current stem cells.

“I just couldn’t sit back and watch him decline,” she said.

“The treatment probably won’t fix the MS but it will hopefully stop him deteriorating. The only other place he can get this treatment is in Russia but he would have to wait until 2018.’’

She thanked supporters of a recent fundraiser at the Logan Village Riding Club which raised about $2000.

“It was a fantastic turnout with more than 40 horse riders competing and many others watching on,” Const Booth said. “Ian is very grateful for everyone who took part and helped raise funds for his cause.’’
