Hunt for callous thieves who stole multiple sclerosis sufferer's car

The husband of multiple sclerosis sufferer has called on two thieves to return a car they stole as the theft has left the couple “stranded” in their home.

Speaking to Liveline, the concerned husband, who acts as a carer for his wife, said the “horrendous” act had left the pair “badly stuck”.

“The car is very important because we’re very badly stuck without it,” said Clondalkin man John.

“My wife has lot of hospital appointments up in Tallaght and without the car she can’t get around.

“I had to lift her in and out of it because she can’t move the lower half of her body – its totally seized up due to the MS.

"That’s why we need to get the car back because we're stranded without it.”

John told RTÉ Radio One that the family’s silver Opel Meriva (08D38142) was taken from the couple’s home in Cherrywood Villas in Clondalkin in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

His brave wife confronted the thieves as they ransacked the couple’s living room, not realising that she was asleep downstairs.

“She actually disturbed them – they came into the front room first and were looking around and didn’t realise she was in the bed in the kitchen,” he said.
“We’ve the bottom of the house modified as best we can to help her get around in the wheelchair and since she can only hold herself up for about ten seconds, she can’t possibility get up the stairs.”

Roaring at the thieves, John said his wife told them: “What are you doing in my house… get the f**k out!!”

Startled, the would-be robbers ran from the house, but not before grabbing a set of car keys left downstairs by John.

“I was silly and left the car keys downstairs and they got hold of them,” he said.
Having spoken to toll operator eFlow, John said he was sure the car was still in the South Dublin area as there had been no sign of the car on the company's CCTV footage.

Anyone who might have seen a silver Opel Meriva (08D38142) in the South Dublin area should contact the Clondalkin Garda Station on 016667600.
