East Limestone High School band raises money for MS

Students, parents and friends of this year’s East Limestone High School marching band set out on their first service project Friday with a lemonade stand to raise money for the Mississippi/Alabama chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

“We thought what better time to sell lemonade than a hot day,” said Robin Lovell, band mom and fundraiser organizer.

Lovell’s employer, Compass-HSV, sponsored the lemonade stand after doing similar projects in honor of one of Lovell’s coworkers. That experience led her to realize that with the size of the East Limestone band, some of those families would be affected by multiple sclerosis.
“Sure enough, some band parents have MS,” Lovell said.

The Marching Indians perform service projects and fundraisers throughout the year. Friday’s event was the first before the school year begins Aug. 5. While the students were in the middle of band camp, they came out to show their support and fill a change jar for MS research.

“The kids are really, really devoted to the community,” Lovell said.
After the plan was made, band director Jennifer Janzen encouraged the rest of the East community to show up.

“We are hoping to let both the Compass-HSV Team and the local MS society know what a truly giving group the East Limestone Band is,” she wrote in an email to band parents.

All proceeds from the lemonade stand went to the MS Society in honor of Lovell’s co-worker and parents of East students battling MS.
