Amanda Murray of Whitby to carry Pan Am Games Torch

Amanda Murray

Amanda Murray has been chosen by the Town of Whitby to represent the municipality as a torchbearer in the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games Torch Relay.

The 10-kilometre Whitby leg of the 41-day torch relay will start at 9 a.m. on Monday, June 8 at Henry Street High School, 600 Henry St. It will stop at 10:30 a.m. at Town Hall, 575 Rossland Rd. E. and arrive at 11:45 a.m. at the Brooklin Community Centre and Library, 8 Vipond Rd.

Ms. Murray is a member of the Town’s Accessibility Advisory Committee and a volunteer Client Services Director for the Durham Region chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada. She works for Rogers Cable TV and is nearing completion of an honours bachelor of arts degree in sociology, political science and English at the University of Toronto.

“I’m so excited to be part of such a large-scale community event,” said Ms. Murray, 34.

“I’m really interested in anything that brings people together and I was honoured that they asked me ... it’s just surreal to be able to participate in something that’s of the magnitude of the Pan Am Games.”

The Pan American Games are one of the world’s largest international multi-sport events, held every four years for athletes of the 41 member nations of the Pan American Sports Organization. The Games comprise all Olympic Summer Games sports, as well as traditional Pan American sports.

Whitby is hosting a community celebration on the day of the torch relay, featuring entertainment, sports, displays, refreshments and activities for all ages at the Brooklin Community Centre and Library from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Ms. Murray will leave the event at 12:45 p.m. to start the run of the torch to its next destination.

Local residents are invited to cheer on Ms. Murray and other torchbearers as they make their way through the town.
