No dread for Simon's big chop

SIMON Parker knows how to grow a good dreadlock - he's been doing it for nine years.

But this month, the 31-year-old will forgo his crowning glory in an effort to raise money for multiple sclerosis.

For three years, Mr Parker has been participating in the MS Walk and Fun Run in Melbourne.

It's a cause close to his heart, as his wife Karrine's aunt Denise Smith passed away from the disease in 2012 after a 20 year battle.

Mrs Parker said she was proud of husband and his decision to sacrifice his locks.

"I think it's great. I am really proud of what he is doing. Hopefully it raises some funds," she said.

MS affects a person's central nervous system.

Mrs Parker said watching her aunt's health deteriorate over the years had been heartbreaking for the family.

"The last couple of years were really rapid. She was forgetting people and couldn't do anything for herself. It was really hard to watch her go through it," she said.

Mr Parker said he hoped to raise $2000 before May 23 - the date he would shave his head.

"Every cent counts. I will also be auctioning off who gets to cut off the hair," he said.

Mr Parker has placed a donation tin at Boating Camping Fishing in High Street.

Donations can also be made online, by visiting register.mswalk.org.au and searching for Team Denise.

The MS Walk and Fun Run is on May 31.
