Canadian senior with MS starts awareness walk at North Topsail Beach: VIDEO

Angela Kirby

A Canadian woman with multiple sclerosis (MS) is attacking the debilitating autoimmune disease head on, and her fight began in eastern North Carolina Sunday.

70-year-old Angela Kirby is from Ontario, Canada. She has lived with MS for 20 years. To celebrate her 70th birthday and acknowledge the 20th anniversary of her first MS exacerbation, she launched the "Walking a World of Friendship for MS" walk.

She started Sunday at North Topsail Beach. She says she chose the area because she and her husband have traveled to North Topsail for the last 6 years on vacation, and she loves the weather.

Kirby, who travels with her husband, will be doing 5K walks in 12 countries and 7 other states throughout the rest of the year. She finishes her walks in the country in October when she goes to Arizona. She'll then spend 10 weeks traveling from South Africa to New Zealand.

She's hoping people will pledge money with the proceeds going to the National MS Society. Kirby's goal is to raise $10,000. Read more about it in the related links section.
