KATU viewer helps girl raise money to battle multiple sclerosis: VIDEO

LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. — They likely never would have met if it wasn't for a shared love of a Blazer legend.

All fans know what Jerome Kersey was capable of on the court, but many say it's how he led his life after he hung up his laces that will define his legacy.

"It makes me happy because I know he would be doing it. So I am going to fill his shoes which are very very big considering his size, but I'll be happy that I'll be able to raise and do as much as I possibly can," Claire Sarnowski said.

We first told you about 10-year-old Claire Sarnowski and her special friendship with Kersey earlier this week. Claire's mom has Multiple Sclerosis, so does Kersey's widow. So the two worked together to help raise money to find a cure.

Longtime Blazers fan Steve Young saw the story and was so impressed with Claire's drive he just had to help.

So he decided to part ways with a basketball he won in an auction more than 20 years ago.

It's signed by every player from the 1991-92 season.

He hopes Claire can put it back up for auction and make some money for MS.

"She's an inspiration I think. A good example for kids but also for adults," Young said.

Claire needs all the help she can get. She set her sights high this year aiming to raise $25,000 in honor of Kersey's number 25 jersey. Saturday morning she got a sign that Kersey is smiling down on his old fundraising buddy.

"I know that right now I have $2,500 exactly. I got it 30 minutes ago. Jerome was number 25 and I feel good about it," Sarnowski said.
