Former Baseball Star Steps up to the Plate to fight Multiple Sclerosis: VIDEO

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla (CBS12) Jim Montgomery's love for baseball runs deep. He was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in high school, but he's now in the competition of his life, which is finding a cure for Multiple Sclerosis, a disease he was diagnosed with in 2008.

"I kind of sat there (shocked)," recalls Montgomery about his reaction to being diagnosed, "knowing it's a neurological (disease), and something there's no cure for."

Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic and, more often than not, progressive disease that affects the central nervous system, causing impairment of speech and of muscular coordination. A disease that Jim's wife Carol saw her late sister have to suffer with as well. She's fighting with her husband to find a cure through the South Florida Walk MS.

"At the finish line, shake that (walker's) hand," says Jim, "that *(walker) might be that one who gave the extra dollar bill that's that magic pill that's come down the tube that is that cure for all of us, and it frees the world of multiple sclerosis."

While the rest of us walk in West Palm Beach on sunday February 22nd , Jim Montgomery is fueled by a nationally published letter written by Carol.

"Jim Montgomery will beat MS," the letter reads, "and my sister is looking down with a smile on her face."
