MS diagnostic method under scrutiny

A new method for obtaining cerebrospinal fluid from patients suffering from multiple sclerosis (MS) will be presented at the 11th International Congress on Multiple Sclerosis in Tehran from October 23 to 24.

Dr. Shokoufeh Alaei, secretary of the congress, said a workshop on investigating cerebrospinal fluid of patients suffering from MS will be held on the sidelines of the two-day congress for neurosurgeons.

She added that a workshop on genetic counseling in multiple sclerosis will also be held.

"Recent findings and perspectives on diagnosis and treatment of MS will be presented at the event," she said.

The specialist further said Dr. Alireza Minagar from Louisiana University Medical Center Neurology Clinic, the US, and Dr. Abdolrahman Rostami will attend the congress.

"150 articles have been sent to the secretariat of the event, of which 50 articles will be presented as lectures and the rest as posters," she said.

Alaei noted that 500 Iranian and foreign neurosurgeons and neurologists will participate in the congress.

Iran Multiple Sclerosis Society in association with Tehran Medical University, Sina MS Research Center and Iranian Neurological Association will organize the event.

Cerebrospinal fluid is a clear colorless bodily fluid found in the brain and spine. It is produced in the choroid plexus of the brain. It acts as a cushion or buffer for the brain's cortex, providing a basic mechanical and immunological protection to the brain inside the skull, and it serves a vital function in cerebral autoregulation of cerebral blood flow.
